29th Annual Inside Out Steelband Festival

featuring:
Emily Lemmerman – Guest Tuner, Builder, and Composer
Inside Out Steelband
and the McCallum HS Knights of Steel

We are excited to present our 29th annual Inside Out Steelband Festival on Wednesday, April 22nd, at 7pm!

Inside Out Steelband and McCallum HS Knights of Steel will perform the music of Emily Lemmerman, an internationally-known professional pan builder and tuner. This performance will even include a live pan tuning demonstration!

As a professional pan tuner, Emily Lemmerman has uncommon access to and perspective on the global steelband landscape. She travels to work with bands around the world- not only as a tuner, but also as an educator, clinician, adviser, and performer.  With a formal background in classical music, after a full-time, six-year apprenticeship with Ellie Mannette, and with over 20 years of experience in the field, Emily is one of few people intensively immersed in the broad range of major steelband communities that exist around the world. Emily is a passionate advocate for collaboration and celebration of the diversity that enriches the many successful pan programs that bring joy to communities across the nation. She is very active internationally, working regularly in the Caribbean and Europe. Emily is a charter member of the NSSBE steering committee and serves as Assistant Editor for its newsletter.

This concert will take place at the McCallum High School Arts Center (5600 Sunshine Drive, 78756).

This concert is free, all-ages, and open to the public, so please bring your family and friends for a night of great music!

This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.

Inside Out Steelband featuring Akina Adderley and Carolyn Trowbridge – June 6, 2026

Please join us at 5pm on Saturday, June 6! Inside Out Steelband will perform with two amazing Austin musicians: Akina Adderley and Carolyn Trowbridge.

Despite the nickname, Akina Adderley is much more than “the little woman with the big voice.” A rock/soul/jazz vocalist, songwriter, bandleader, arranger, and educator based in Austin, Texas, Adderley’s music reflects both her modern rock ‘n roll sensibility and her deep jazz roots. Margaret Moser (Austin Chronicle) wrote, “Jazz is in Akina Adderley’s blood, and it flows with a warm mix of old-school soul and R&B.” Akina’s father is acclaimed jazz pianist and arranger Nat Adderley, Jr. (long-time bandleader for Luther Vandross), and her grandfather and granduncle were venerated jazz musicians: cornetist Nat Adderley, Sr. and alto saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (Miles Davis, Kind of Blue). While their towering musical legacy flows through her, Akina’s artistry is all her own.

Vibraphonist and multi-instrumentalist Carolyn Trowbridge is a vibrant force in Austin’s music scene—as a performer, studio musician, composer, and educator. Hailed by the Austin Chronicle as a “vibraphone sorceress,” she moves fluidly across genres, performing with rock bands, Afrobeat ensembles, avant-garde jazz groups, mainstream vocalists, and classical ensembles. From the US to Australia, her dynamic résumé includes collaborations with Grammy-nominated Black Pumas, Adrian Quesada, Curtis Harding, Graham Reynolds, studio sessions with Stephen Perkins and Mike Portnoy; an appearance with the Grammy-winning choir Conspirare for a PBS special; and an ACL Live performance opening for Snoop Dogg.

A frequent featured artist and longtime educator, Trowbridge has delivered masterclasses across the U.S. and leads and composes for her own neo-exotica inspired quintet. Originally from Alexandria, VA, she grew up overseas in Gabon, the Czech Republic, and Norway before earning music degrees in Percussion Performance from James Madison University and The University of Texas at Austin. Her versatility, creativity, and expressive approach to the vibraphone continue to make her one of Austin’s most in-demand artists.

This concert will take place at The Griffin School (5001 Evans Ave, 78751).

This concert is free, all-ages, and open to the public, so please bring your family and friends for an evening of great music!

This project is supported in part by an Elevate Grant of Austin Arts, Culture, Music, & Entertainment.
